Google Ads Lets Advertisers Set Up Conversion Lift Studies Themselves
Google Ads now lets advertisers set up Conversion Lift studies without a Google representative. They need at least 1,000 observable conversions, a budget of $5,000 or more, and compatible tracking.
Google Ads now lets advertisers set up Conversion Lift studies without involving a Google representative. As Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 8, 2026, the change appears in the service’s updated help documentation. Self-service setup is now available, but it requires a certain volume of conversions, a sufficient budget, and suitable tracking.
What’s Changed in Conversion Lift Setup
Previously, setting up Conversion Lift for Search and Performance Max campaigns required contacting a Google representative. Advertisers can now do it themselves. The change concerns how a study is launched: it does not remove the requirements that the account and campaign must meet.
Google’s updated help documentation lists three requirements:
- At least 1,000 observable conversions. Conversions with additional data do not count toward this minimum.
- A campaign budget of at least $5,000 for the study.
- At least one conversion action tracked in the account that is compatible with Conversion Lift.
For advertisers, being able to proceed without a Google representative does not mean unrestricted access to setup. If any requirement is not met, the new setup process alone will not make it possible to run a study. It is especially important not to confuse all recorded conversions with the observable conversions that count toward the minimum.
The help documentation has changed more than its answer to whom advertisers should contact for setup: it now specifies who can launch a study themselves. That distinction is useful when planning ad campaigns. You can check whether you meet the requirements first, then decide which campaign to include in the study.
Supported Campaigns and Restrictions
Conversion Lift supports Display, Search, and Video campaigns, Demand Gen, App campaigns, and Performance Max. There are exceptions, however: App campaigns targeting iOS are not currently supported. The same applies to Travel Ads. So a campaign’s presence in the list of supported types is not, by itself, enough to confirm that it can be included in a study.
There is also a limit on participation in multiple studies. Each campaign can be part of no more than one study at a time, whether it is Brand Lift, Search Lift, or Conversion Lift. If the campaign you want is already in another study, you will first have to remove it from that study. Only then can you add it to a new one.
This rule applies to the campaign itself, not just to the choice of measurement format. When running multiple studies, it matters which campaigns are already in use. Being able to set up Conversion Lift yourself does not remove the restriction on simultaneous participation: even if you meet the access requirements, your chosen campaign may already be committed elsewhere.
It is also worth distinguishing specific exceptions from the general list of supported campaign types. App campaigns are on the list, but those targeting iOS are currently excluded. Travel Ads call for the same careful reading: you cannot include them in a study plan based on the general list alone.
What This Means for Businesses and Marketers
The main change for advertisers is one less step involving a Google representative to arrange setup. If the requirements are met and the campaign is not subject to the restrictions, you can set up the study yourself. But the update does not make Conversion Lift available to everyone already advertising on Google Ads.
In practice, you can start by checking your account against the three requirements in the help documentation, then check the selected campaign’s type and whether it is part of another study. This separates two questions: whether self-service setup is available to you, and whether a particular campaign can be included. A “yes” to the first does not guarantee a “yes” to the second.
Website owners should discuss not just the conversions shown in reports with their marketers, but which of those conversions count toward this threshold. Otherwise, the decision to launch a study may rest on a figure that cannot be used to establish eligibility. Nor should self-service setup be mistaken for a change to the budget requirement: the minimum amount for a study remains a separate condition.
For teams running several types of campaigns, the news primarily changes the administrative side of the work. Once the access requirements are met, they can move straight to setup instead of contacting a Google representative. But campaign format and study participation restrictions still need to be considered when choosing a campaign.
My View: Match Measurement to the Business Goal
I would not treat self-service setup as a reason to make advertising more complicated for every small business. In my furniture workshop, I first find out where customers come from and what they want to see on the website. I think it makes sense to approach measurement the same way: first define the question you need answered, then choose how to answer it.
In my view, the conversion and budget thresholds make this a practical change primarily for advertisers who already meet the requirements. For them, an administrative step has been removed. If you do not yet meet the requirements, it is more useful to keep your goals clear and your customer data in order than to plan a study simply because you can now launch one without a Google representative.

The $5,000 minimum is a meaningful commitment, especially if the study is inconclusive or the results are hard to act on. Does Google show the expected study duration and what happens if a campaign falls below the eligibility thresholds after setup, before an advertiser commits that budget?

One practical check before launching is whether the conversion window is long enough for the business’s actual purchase cycle; otherwise, the study may miss delayed outcomes even when the account clears the 1,000-conversion threshold. I’d also avoid changing major campaign settings mid-study, since that can make the lift result harder to interpret.

That’s a useful safeguard: the 1,000-conversion minimum says little if the study window is too short for customers to complete the purchase. For a grocery store, I’d also keep the campaign settings steady and the measurement period aligned with the real buying cycle, so the result is useful enough to guide budget decisions.

For a small business, I’d also check what counts as an observable conversion before committing the $5,000 study budget. If the 1,000-conversion threshold isn’t met, or the tracking setup excludes some orders, the study may not be launchable—or may answer a narrower question than the one behind the budget decision.
