Bring back the domain of a closed custom gamepad store: restore the site from archives, keep every historical URL and the trust of search engines — and build a new project on it.

Context

Where they started

From 2017 to 2023 gamer2go.com was home to a Shopify store selling custom controllers for Xbox and PlayStation. After the store closed, the domain expired, and in 2024 it was taken over for online casino spam.

We restored the store as the archives preserved it, removed the traces of spam and started building a new site on the same domain.

Solution

What we did

Digging through the archives

Using Wayback Machine and Common Crawl, we pieced together the domain’s history: 200 historical URLs, categories, titles, images and copy.

A URL map

For every URL we decided: restore, redirect, or honestly return 404 or 410. The result: 172 pages answer 200, 15 justified 301 redirects, 12 URLs return 404 and one returns 410.

A design archive instead of a store

Product pages and 12 collections are back at their original URLs, but without prices, basket or payment — with a note that the store is closed and these designs are no longer sold.

Cleaning up after the spam

We removed the previous owner’s contacts, trackers and site verifications; the spam casino files return 410 Gone. We rebuilt robots.txt and a 79‑URL sitemap from scratch.

A new site alongside the old one

WordPress sits in the same root behind pre‑launch protection. Visitors and search engines see the restored pages, and historical URLs are served before WordPress, so not one of them changes.
